Apple has revealed two new smartphones, the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. Both devices will go on sale this month with the brand new iOS 8 operating system.
The new iPhone launches see the first time Apple has ventured above 4-inches for a display size. The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is still considerably smaller than many top Android devices like the Samsung Galaxy S5, HTC One M8 and LG G3.
The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus is Apple’s bid to enter the popular ‘phablet’ arena. As the name suggests, these large-screened handsets are supposed to bridge the gap between phones and tablets.
Both new iPhones have Apple’s improved Retina Display HD technology, which offers more pixels per inch than the human eye can individually discern at arm’s length. The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 has a resolution of 1334 x 750 and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus is 1920 x 1080p with a whopping 401ppi.
That’s over 2 million pixels. That falls below some of the quad-HD displays we’ve seen enter the smartphone market in 2014, but it’s still an improvement for Apple.
The new iPhones are the first devices to include the new generation Apple A8 processor, which promises to improve speed by 25 per cent. It’s also 50 per cent more efficient, meaning longer battery life.
Like it’s predecessor, the A8 chip, is built on a 64-bit architecture and is joined by an M8 Motion Co-Processor that handles all of the data created by the phone’s motion sensors. In terms of RAM, Apple never reveals how much memory its iPhones have. That will be revealed as soon as someone cracks up the phone and takes a look at the components.
The battery life is pegged at 14 hours talk time for the iPhone 6 and 24 hours talk time for the 6 Plus. Another big improvement.
The new generation of iPhones have broken away from the squared metallic design first introduced with the iPhone 4. The new models have much curvier bodies with a curved metallic metal casing.
The new iPhones are also the slimmest yet, measuring up at just 6.9 and 7.1mm respectively. To make the larger iPhone 6 Plus easier to use with one hand, Apple has moved the sleep/wake button to the right side of the screen.
The devices will be available in three colours; Space Grey, Gold and Silver. If you don’t like those there are new colourful silicon cases.
The larger iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are available with upto 128GB built in storage space. That’s twice as much as the iPhone 5S, which maxes out at 64GB storage.
Available sizes are now 16GB, 64GB and 128GB. There’s no longer a 32GB option. Through iCloud and the new iCloud Drive platform users will be able to store more files on the web, leaving more space to install their favourite App Store apps and store offline music.- 5.5 inch (1920 x 1080) Retina HD Display
